9/10/08 Minutes

I. Our first order of business was to introduce AED and its officers.

a. Natasha – President

II. Membership –

a. All you first years will join as an associate member your first year. This is a great way to see if AED is right for you and to explore a medical interest.

b. National membership occurs during the second semester of your second year or greater. This is where everything is official including getting AED honor society on your transcript.

c. The process includes a short application and a Major and Total GPA greater than 3.2


III. Service Projects –

a. Ronald McDonald – here we provide a dinner for families with sick children at the hospital. This is a great way to get involved and meet some fellow AED members. Our sheets for this month and the beginning of Oct are full but don’t worry there will be plenty of opportunities throughout the semester.

b. Cedars Retirement Home – Come make a seniors day! We play bingo with them and give out prizes and simply give them company. This is an equally rewarding project to get into to.


IV. New Ideas for 08

a. Red cross training and blood donations

b. Medical school visitations around VA

c. C-ville public school first aid instruction


V. Finally we will update our website soon!


VI. Things to keep in mind:

a. Dues are $10

b. T-shirts from last year are 7, we still have a couple to be sold.

c. Our next meeting is Oct 1st, 7pm location TBA – we will have an admissions director from the American University of Antigua College of Medicine speaking at this meeting - DON’T MISS OUT

d. We will have a brief question and answer session at the beginning of next meeting if you guys still have some unresolved questions.

I. Tonight's Speakers

Dr. Richard Pearson, Dean of Students at UVa Medical School and Doctor of Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease, and Dr. Wendi El-Amin, a practitioner of Family Medicine and a member of the admissions committee at UVa Med, came to speak to us tonight and held a Q&A session afterward. II. Service Projects

A. Ronald McDonald House
- Feb. 9th and 15th; 4:30-6:00 PM
- If you signed up to go to Ronald McDonald House and make dinner on one of these dates, you will receive a carpool e-mail from Neel

B. Cedars Nursing Home
- Saturday, Feb. 2nd 3-4 PM
- If you signed up to go to Cedars Nursing Home to play Bingo, you will receive an e-mail about carpools from Christine

C. Music in Hospital Lobby
- If you signed the interest sheet for playing music (piano, or some portable instrument) in the UVa Hospital lobby, you will receive an e-mail from Christine with more information

III. Surgery Viewings

- Members who have shown strong interest in and dedication to AED meetings and events are able to view surgeries at the UVa Hospital
- If you feel that you qualify, send an e-mail to Lillian at lman@virginia.edu

IV. Tutoring-- Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry

- If you would like to tutor or be tutored, contact Neel at neelson88@aol.com

V. Mentorship Program

- Would you like to be mentored by an upperclassman in AED, or would you like to be a mentor? Contact Lillian at lman@virginia.edu

VI. National Membership Application

- Prerequisites for national membership: minimum of 3 semesters of pre-med coursework, minimum 3.2 cumulative and science GPAs, must already be an associate member of AED (i.e. pay your $10 dues and receive your AED t-shirt)
- National membership goes on your official UVa transcript!
- The application for national membership in AED will be available on our website by the end of next week, and Katie will also send it to the mailing list as an attachment, so stay tuned!
- Deadline for application is Friday, March 14th

VII. UCS Medical Student Panel

- TOMORROW (Wed.), Jan. 30, 5-6 PM in Bryant Hall
- AED also had a similar med student panel in the Fall-- if you missed that meeting and would like to contact the medical students who spoke, you can find their contact information on our website (www.student.virginia.edu/~premed) under "Meeting Notes" for the October meeting

VIII. Dues

- It's not too late to pay your $10 associate dues and receive your AED t-shirt!
- Remember, if you plan to apply for national membership in March, you MUST be an associate member already!

- At our next meeting, you'll get the chance to find out about different summer opportunities (lab research, shadowing, summer abroad, and more!); different stations will be set up around the room so you can hear about whatever interests you!

Tonight we had a panel of 5 first-year UVA medical students come to the meeting to talk about their experiences, give advice, and answer questions. If you have any other questions for them, feel free to e-mail them at the addresses below!

IV. Dues and t-shirts
- for those of you who paid dues at the meeting tonight and did not receive your t-shirt: we will be ordering more shirts ASAP, so you should have it at the next meeting!
- for those of you who have NOT paid dues yet: you can always leave a $10 check in AED's mailbox (#188) at the Student Activities Center in Newcomb Hall-- just be sure to write your t-shirt size on the memo line and you can pick up your shirt at our next meeting!

II. Kaplan
Kaplan will be offering a free practice MCAT at UVA on October 21st-- Visit their website to sign up! Also, AED members get a $100 discount when they sign up for a Kaplan test prep course!

III. Surgery viewings
AED members showing commitment and interest will be able to view surgeries at the UVA hospital this year. General, cardiac, thoracic, vascular, and neurological surgeries are all open for viewing. We will have more information about this later. Attendance at AED meetings and events will be strongly considered when planning the viewing trips.

IV. Service Opportunities
a. Piedmont Hospice: The required training is 20 hours and will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting on October 16th. Volunteers get great patient interaction here! If you signed up for more information at the meeting tonight, Neel will be e-mailing you shortly. If you were not at the meeting tonight and this is something you're interested in, please contact Neel.
b. Creciendo Juntos: This Saturday, September 15th, there is a fair at Southwood Trailer Park where health screenings will be provided. Spanish-speaking skills would be helpful, but are not required. If you signed up to attend, Lillian will be e-mailing you shortly. The next date to volunteer at Creciendo Juntos is Sunday, October 21st, from 2-6 PM. Sign-ups will take place at our next meeting!
c. Ronald McDonald: Provides low-income housing to pediatric patients and their families. There will be a trip this Saturday, September 15th-- if you signed up to go, you'll be receiving an e-mail with details shortly. If you were not at the meeting and would like to attend, please contact Christine with your name, e-mail, class year, and whether or not you have a car and can drive.

V. Membership
$10 dues are required to be an associate member, and you get an AED t-shirt! If you couldn't pay your dues at tonight's meeting, you can leave a $10 check (made out to AED) in Box #188 at the Student Activities Center (located on the first floor of Newcomb Hall). Please indicate what size shirt you'd like, and you can pick it up at the next meeting! To be a national member (and have it go on your transcript), you must be at least a second year and maintain a 3.2 GPA or above. The application will be online sometime in the early Spring. I'll be sure to let you know as soon as it goes up!
